Start by measuring your available space and room depth. Leave at least 90 cm clearance for walkways and 40–45 cm between the sofa and coffee table if you have one. In many Irish new-build homes, living rooms range between 3.2–4.5 metres wide, so oversized sofas can quickly dominate the space.
Most sofas range between 85–100 cm deep. 85–90 cm suits upright sitting, 95–110 cm offers deeper lounging comfort. If you prefer stretching out or taller household members are using it, a deeper seat (55–65 cm seat depth) is often more comfortable.
High-back sofas offer a cleaner, more structured look and require less daily maintenance. Pillow-back sofas provide a softer, relaxed aesthetic but require regular cushion plumping to maintain shape. Your choice depends on styling preference and how much upkeep you’re comfortable with.
Durability depends on construction and fabric rating. Performance polyester is great for resisting staining and fading, especially from sunlight. Leather is long-lasting and easy to wipe clean, while velvet offers luxury but may require more maintenance.
For busy Irish households with children or pets, tightly woven fabrics or protected leather are often safest.A well-built sofa with a hardwood frame should last at least 7–15 years. Higher-end frames and quality foam cushions can extend lifespan further. Regular cushion rotation and correct cleaning significantly increase durability.
High-density foam offers firm support and shape retention. Fibre-filled cushions feel softer but may flatten quicker. Feather blends provide luxury softness but require regular plumping. Your ideal option depends on comfort preference and maintenance tolerance.

Buying a sofa can end up being one of the most significant purchases you make. A sofa is many things. It is what you will probably relax on at the end of a hard day's work. It is what you will invite friends and family to sit on when they drop by for a chat. Next, who is going to be using it the most? You may want to choose a neutral colour.
