School’s out for summer – or at least some schools are. And as a parent, this can be a wonderful opportunity to spend more time with your little ones outside of the classroom. During these few short months, you’ll get to enjoy watching your little ones grow a little more, explore new hobbies, and learn new skills. But when the summer holidays first begin, and the routine of everyday life is turned upside down, it can leave some parents feeling a little lost. Instead of rushing out in the morning, hurtling everyone into the car or bus to take them to school before making your own way to work, there’s now a need to fill their time and yours with something else...or, in other words, a collaborative project. And what better than a makeover for your child’s bedroom? With your children around, you can finally get their opinion on paint colours, decorative accessories, storage options, and bed type. Still, as with any project, it’s hard to know where to start...which is why EZ Living Furniture has created a blog to help you with the first few initial steps. So, if you’re looking for a few decorative ideas for your child’s bedroom, keep reading.....

1. Carve Out Some Time To Research & Plan
Take some time out of your day to discuss some design ideas with your child. After all, it’s their room you’re going to be redecorating, so it should reflect their ideas, showcase their personality, and highlight their hobbies in a way that’s fun and meaningful for them. Searching online for inspiration is always something we recommend, but if you’re more of a “see it in person” type of person, then a quick trip to your local furniture store might work better for you. Make sure to include all your child’s ideas in a way that’s fun but also practical for growth.

2. Incorporate Your Child’s Hobbies & Personality
Bringing your child’s ideas to life is one thing, but reflecting their personality on top of that can be more difficult than it seems. Sometimes these ideas can clash, especially if your little one loves space and wants a glow-in-the-dark ceiling, but their hobby is ballet. This is why it is so important to plan ahead and incorporate non-permanent design ideas where possible. By doing so, if the ideas clash, you can simply remove one or replace it with something else.
For instance, painting a mural of their favourite cartoon character might seem like a good idea now, and your child might love it, but when they get older, they might come to find that it no longer has the same appeal it once had. Whereas a framed print of their favourite animated figure can be easily taken down and replaced with something more age-appropriate.

3. Choose Versatile Furniture That Grows With Them
To make your new bedroom style come to life, appropriate furniture is needed, but instead of just choosing furniture for the here and now, you’ll need carefully selected pieces that will continue to grow with your child – especially if you want to get value for your money. Take the bed, for instance, it’s arguably the most important item in any bedroom. Of course, you could always purchase a standard single bed now, but when your child becomes a teenager or perhaps even an adult, a double bed is probably going to be more appropriate. The same goes for when they begin to get older and want to host sleepovers; in this case, a bed with a trundle underneath might be the best choice. Or why not make the most of your available floor space and invest in a bunk bed? There are a lot of sizes to choose from, including double sleepers (single on the bottom, single on the top) and even triple sleepers (double on the bottom, single on the top). Before investing in anything, think about how this item of furniture will serve your child in the future.
4. You Can Never Have Too Much Storage
Every child’s bedroom needs storage – heck, everyone’s bedroom needs storage, whether it’s for clothes, shoes, bags, or toys, a suitable solution to hide away any items is an absolute must. Of course, a combination of a blanket box, chest of drawers, bedside lockers, and a tall, tiered shelf would be the absolute dream, but many with small rooms have to make the difficult decisions and choose fewer options. For a child’s bedroom, we suggest choosing a bedside locker, a chest of drawers, and a blanket box. These items will function well when they are small and grow with them as they age.

5. Use Paint Wisely
Avoid fleeting trends when it comes to paint, and instead select nature-inspired neutrals, like soft whites, warm beiges, or deep earthy greens. A dark purple might seem like a fun choice right now, but by choosing a timeless paint colour in one of our suggested colours above, you’ll create a space that can be redecorated to a different theme again and again. Remember also, when picking a paint colour, to consider the room’s permanent elements and natural light. The best way to test a paint swatch in any space before committing is to paint a piece of white paper and bring that into the room with you. Move it around the space and hold it up against each wall and near windows to get a good understanding of how the colour can change in different areas.

6. Don’t Forget Your Soft Furnishings
Once you have your child’s bedroom painted and furnished, with or without their help, you’ll need to start on the finishing touches. While some might consider accessories unnecessary additions, it’s actually these pieces that can tie a whole look together. Some even do more than just add a visual benefit. Take rugs, for example. A simple, small rug adds a layer of protection to a floor and makes for a great soft play surface for a baby. Also, when your little one starts to grow, a small rug can be moved around much more easily to create other defined zones in the room, like a study area.
