Whether your bedroom is the size of a shoebox or takes up an entire floor, bedside lockers are a must. After all, having a surface on either side of the bed means that many things can be grabbed at a moment’s notice. A bedside table typically has three drawers, but some may come with less and have two or even one, but this depends on the design. In every instance, you can keep things like skincare products right next to you. Simply, place your moisturiser, eye cream, and hand lotion next to you at arm’s length. It may be a stretch to suggest this, but essentially bedside lockers keep us looking glowy and youthful. Still, what if you don’t need the drawers for storage underneath and all you really need is a small surface. Well, there are many alternatives for this situation and fortunately, EZ Living Furniture is here to help once again. In this blog, you will discover many alternatives to regular bedside tables that serve many of the same purposes.

Consider A Side Table

A side table is a great compromise when it comes to a bedside locker because it has almost all of the same uses. Although side tables don’t typically come with storage options, they still have the surface on top which can be used for any nighttime products such as a book, mobile phone, or most importantly, table lamps. If you know you won’t really need any drawers for storing clothing or various items, then a side table could just be the perfect solution to your nightstand problem. Just look at the Catalan Side Table above, not only is it great for keeping that essential cup of tea near, but it also looks amazing too!

EZ TIP: Make sure to measure each alternative table against your divan bed or bed frame. When lying in bed, the table next to it should be level with the top of the mattress. Of course, if your alternative table is further away from the bed, then this doesn’t really matter because you will still need to get up to reach something from it.

Try An Accent Table

Accent tables are usually found in a living room. The reason behind this is that they are not only functional, but they can also create a statement and will add to the overall decor. This beautiful Greek Side Table above certainly draws the eye, but as you can see it can also house all the necessities when placed next to a bed.

A Console Table Works Too!

Although longer in width, console tables can also work as nightstands. This may not work for smaller rooms with couples who may need their own table on each side of a double bed, but it can be beneficial in other situations. A children’s bedroom with two single beds against the left and right walls could find one console table in the middle useful for both youngsters. Our Malta Console Table above has two separate drawers, one for each child which means less fighting and more time for sibling bonding.

Why Not Use A Hall Table?

Do you remember home phones? Well, maybe then you also remember a telephone table. They usually consisted of dark mahogany wood with a pink velvet seat and a tiny work surface attached to it. This surface was just big enough to accommodate those what-now-seems-like massive home phones. Most of these tables would have a drawer underneath to store the Yellow Pages or a simple phone book. Luckily, we no longer have to see these hideous desks unless visiting our elderly relatives. Thankfully, these have since been replaced by hall tables, which is great. A hall table, like a telephone alternative, will usually have one drawer. The India Hall Table is small but extremely useful and we think it would make the perfect bedside locker, what do you think?

A Chest Of Drawers Is Multi-Functional

Like a console table, if space is limited in a child’s bedroom a chest of drawers might just be what you need. Yes, these tables are longer in width, but they can serve two people when positioned in the middle of two single beds and they are multifunctional. Instead of two bedside tables, simply include one dresser in your design. Using a chest of drawers as a bedside locker in a larger bedroom can work too. Dressers create more surface space so you can include two bedside lamps and have more room for your belongings. The main difference between a console table and a dresser is, of course, the amount of storage space. A chest of drawers, like the Iris above, will usually have various-shaped drawers which are great for storing clothing while a console table might have one or two small drawers just big enough for compact items.

Cube floating shelves

Floating Shelves For Smaller Spaces

A floating shelf provides a surface similar to a bedside locker but doesn’t consume any floor space. This is ideal for smaller bedrooms that don’t have a lot of available room to spare but still want somewhere to keep their nighttime essentials. These cost-effective alternatives come in a large range of sizes and styles and are a modern twist on a traditional bedside table. Some are quite simple in their design with open parallel shelves, while others are enclosed and have a hexagon or even cube shape. These floating shelves are extremely versatile and can be included in most bedrooms as long as there is a wall behind the bed to attach them to. Better still, these shelves can also be stacked if one just isn’t enough.

Unusual Alternatives Worth Consideration

With a little creativity, there is no end to the number of items that can double as a nightstand. A desk, coffee table, and nest of tables to name but a few, though, there are also more unusual alternatives for those of you who can’t afford to invest in new pieces of furniture. For example, do you have a surplus of dining chairs for occasions when you need extra seating but never seem to use them? A simple dining chair on either side of the bed acts as the perfect surface. A blanket box, although lower has a great deal of storage space and again, has a level top perfect for bedside necessities. Instead of placing a bench at the bottom of a bed frame, position it next to the bed. You can sit on this to put your shoes on in the morning and use it as a bedside table. Even a stack of books will suffice if you’re really in a pickle.
