Question 1

Should I choose a fixed-back or reclined-style 3 seater?

Accepted Answer

Fixed-back models provide structured support and cleaner lines, while reclining or deeper lounge designs prioritize relaxation but may require more space behind the sofa for the reclining mechanism.

Question 2

What’s the biggest mistake people make when buying a 3 seater?

Accepted Answer

The biggest mistake is choosing a sofa based on width alone. Buyers often forget to check seat depth, back height, arm thickness, and overall room proportion, all of which are just as important as the dimensions.

Question 3

How long should a quality 3 seater last?

Accepted Answer

A well-constructed hardwood-framed sofa should last 10 to 15 years or more years with proper care. Regular cushion rotation and vacuuming help preserve both the structure and appearance of the sofa.

Question 4

How heavy is a typical 3 seater sofa?

Accepted Answer

A typical 3 seater sofa weighs between 45 and 80 kg depending on the construction and materials. Hardwood frames and reclining mechanisms increase the weight, so it is important to measure access routes before delivery.

Question 5

Is a 3 seater too large for a small living room?

Accepted Answer

In rooms under 3.5 metres wide, a bulky 3 seater can dominate the space; however, choosing slim-arm designs, raised legs, and lighter fabrics can help reduce its visual heaviness.

Question 6

What upholstery works best for a 3 seater in a busy home?

Accepted Answer

Because a 3 seater gets frequent use, durable options like tightly woven polyester blends, performance fabrics, or protected leather are best. Choosing darker or mid-tone colours is also recommended for busy households.

Question 7

What seat height is best for a 3 seater sofa?

Accepted Answer

Seat height usually ranges from 52 to 65 cm, with 52 to 55 cm being suitable for upright sitting and 60 to 65 cm providing relaxed lounging comfort. Taller individuals may prefer higher seats for better leg support.

Question 8

Is a 3 seater suitable for open-plan living areas?

Accepted Answer

Yes, in open-plan homes, a 3 seater often anchors the seating zone. Placing it facing a TV wall or fireplace helps define the living area without the need for a full corner unit.

Question 9

How much clearance should I allow around a 3 seater sofa?

Accepted Answer

You should allow 90 to 100 cm for main walkways and 40 to 45 cm between the sofa and a coffee table. Additionally, ensure there is enough rear clearance if placing the sofa against a window or radiator to prevent the room from feeling crowded. This also applies if the sofa is a recliner.

Question 10

Is a 3 seater sofa large enough for a family?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a 3 seater comfortably fits three adults and often serves as the primary seating piece in family living rooms. For households of four or more, it is commonly paired with a 2 seater, armchair, or footstool.

Question 11

What is the standard size of a 3 seater sofa?

Accepted Answer

Most 3 seater sofas measure between 190 and 230 cm wide with a depth of 85 to 105 cm. It is important to check both overall width and seat depth, especially in homes where living rooms range from 3.5 to 5 metres wide.

Question 12

Are fabric sofas good for homes with pets?

Accepted Answer

Yes, fabric sofas are good for homes with pets if you choose tightly woven fabrics that resist claw snags and avoid loose weaves. Mid-tone colours also help disguise minor marks and pet hair better than very light or very dark shades.

Question 13

Will fabric sofas fade in sunlight?

Accepted Answer

Prolonged direct sunlight can cause fading over time, especially in darker colours. To prevent this, position sofas away from strong south-facing windows where possible or use blinds to reduce UV exposure. Polyester fabrics are more resistant to fading, but will still fade after prolonged expesure to sunlight.

Question 14

Do fabric sofas stain easily?

Accepted Answer

Staining depends on the weave and treatment of the material. Performance fabrics and synthetic blends resist staining better than natural fibres, and applying a fabric protector such as Guardsman can add extra protection.

Question 15

Are fabric sofas easy to clean?

Accepted Answer

Most modern fabrics are designed for easy maintenance, needing only weekly vacuuming with a soft brush attachment and immediate blotting of spills. Some models include removable cushion covers for easier cleaning, but you should always follow manufacturer care guidelines.

Question 16

What does “rub count” mean in fabric sofas?

Accepted Answer

Rub count, often measured using the Martindale test, indicates durability where 15,000–25,000 signifies light domestic use, 25,000–40,000 indicates general domestic use, and 40,000+ suggests heavy domestic use. Higher rub counts generally mean better resistance to wear.

Question 17

Are fabric sofas durable enough for family homes?

Accepted Answer

Yes, fabric sofas are durable enough for family homes provided you choose tightly woven, high-rub-count fabrics. Performance fabrics and polyester blends are particularly suitable for busy households with children or pets.

Question 18

How do I choose the right size sofa for my living room?

Accepted Answer

Start by measuring your available space and room depth. Leave at least 90 cm clearance for walkways and 40–45 cm between the sofa and coffee table if you have one. In many Irish new-build homes, living rooms range between 3.2–4.5 metres wide, so oversized sofas can quickly dominate the space.

Question 19

What is the standard depth of a sofa?

Accepted Answer

Most sofas range between 85–100 cm deep. 85–90 cm suits upright sitting, 95–110 cm offers deeper lounging comfort. If you prefer stretching out or taller household members are using it, a deeper seat (55–65 cm seat depth) is often more comfortable.

Question 20

What is the difference between fixed-back and scatter-back sofas?

Accepted Answer

High-back sofas offer a cleaner, more structured look and require less daily maintenance. Pillow-back sofas provide a softer, relaxed aesthetic but require regular cushion plumping to maintain shape. Your choice depends on styling preference and how much upkeep you’re comfortable with.

Question 21

Which sofa material is most durable for family homes?

Accepted Answer

Durability depends on construction and fabric rating. Performance polyester is great for resisting staining and fading, especially from sunlight. Leather is long-lasting and easy to wipe clean, while velvet offers luxury but may require more maintenance.
For busy Irish households with children or pets, tightly woven fabrics or protected leather are often safest.

Question 22

How long should a good quality sofa last?

Accepted Answer

A well-built sofa with a hardwood frame should last at least 7–15 years. Higher-end frames and quality foam cushions can extend lifespan further. Regular cushion rotation and correct cleaning significantly increase durability.

Question 23

What cushion filling is best: foam, fibre, or feather?

Accepted Answer

High-density foam offers firm support and shape retention. Fibre-filled cushions feel softer but may flatten quicker. Feather blends provide luxury softness but require regular plumping. Your ideal option depends on comfort preference and maintenance tolerance.
