How do I choose the right size sofa for my living room?

Start by measuring your available space and room depth. Leave at least 90 cm clearance for walkways and 40–45 cm between the sofa and coffee table if you have one. In many Irish new-build homes, living rooms range between 3.2–4.5 metres wide, so oversized sofas can quickly dominate the space.

What is the standard depth of a sofa?

Most sofas range between 85–100 cm deep . 85–90 cm suits upright sitting, 95–110 cm offers deeper lounging comfort. If you prefer stretching out or taller household members are using it, a deeper seat (55–65 cm seat depth) is often more comfortable.

What is the difference between fixed-back and scatter-back sofas?

High-back sofas offer a cleaner, more structured look and require less daily maintenance. Pillow-back sofas provide a softer, relaxed aesthetic but require regular cushion plumping to maintain shape. Your choice depends on styling preference and how much upkeep you’re comfortable with.

Which sofa material is most durable for family homes?

Durability depends on construction and fabric rating. Performance polyester is great for resisting staining and fading, especially from sunlight. Leather is long-lasting and easy to wipe clean, while velvet offers luxury but may require more maintenance. For busy Irish households with children or pets, tightly woven fabrics or protected leather are often safest.

How long should a good quality sofa last?

A well-built sofa with a hardwood frame should last at least 7–15 years. Higher-end frames and quality foam cushions can extend lifespan further. Regular cushion rotation and correct cleaning significantly increase durability.

What cushion filling is best: foam, fibre, or feather?

High-density foam offers firm support and shape retention. Fibre-filled cushions feel softer but may flatten quicker. Feather blends provide luxury softness but require regular plumping. Your ideal option depends on comfort preference and maintenance tolerance.

Maintenance

Genuine Leather Care:

Genuine leather is durable and will last you a lifetime if properly maintained. Regular maintenance is required for genuine leather.

Use leather cleaning wipes 3-4 times a year or more often in sunny or dry rooms, homes with pets, and high-use rooms. These wipes clean, add moisture, and add a protective barrier to your leather furniture which can help to prevent scratches.
Remove a build-up of dust on leather with a slightly damp cloth. Dust will need to be removed from time to time because dust can be abrasive and wear leather down.
Do not use baby wipes to clean your leather furniture. These contain chemicals that will damage your leather over time.
Remove stains that have just occurred (grease, wine etc.), using a slightly damp cloth. Using leather wipes create a barrier to prevent stains from absorbing in.
Remove ink by using an ink remover wipe. This can be found in most leather cleaning kits.
Avoid placing your genuine leather furniture next to heat sources such as radiators, fires, or areas that receive a lot of sun. This will dry out your leather upholstery quicker which can lead to damage.

Fabric Upholstery Care:

This fabric is 100% polyester, chosen for its durability, longevity, and ease of cleaning.
Remove dust from polyester using the brush attachment and a low suction on your vacuum.
Remove general dirt on lighter-colored polyester using an upholstery wipe.
Remove unwanted marks using a fabric sofa cleaning kit. Always test this on a concealed area of the fabric first.
