We will admit that bedroom chairs aren’t the typical items of furniture people think of adding when they start decorating a bedroom. Still, they aren’t any less important either. While some will focus on the main pieces such as a bed frame, mattress, bedside lockers, and a dressing table, bedroom chairs are something no one should be without. But what is a bedroom chair? Well, some might argue that it is essentially an armchair placed in a bedroom and we wouldn’t disagree entirely. But sometimes it isn’t a bedroom chair or an armchair when its purpose changes or it has additional features. In this EZ Living Furniture blog, we are going to explore this for you and answer the crucial question - When is a bedroom chair not a bedroom chair?
Well, it’s not a bedroom chair when it’s a……
Rocking Chair
A rocking chair, especially a wooden one, is one of those chairs that will automatically cast your mind back to your grandmother’s house. There she would casually sit with her knitting needles in hand, rocking back and forth. Fortunately, rocking chairs have come a long way since then. Now, these modern-type rocking chairs have become an armchair with curved legs and don’t compromise on comfort. These foam-filled upholstered chairs are not bedroom chairs per se but could definitely still be used in one or in any room for that matter.
Wing Chair
Wing chairs are armchairs with a twist. Again, they are not bedroom chairs but can be used as such. A wing chair is a chair with wings attached to the back of the chair. Typically, but not always, the wings will stretch down to the armrest. The Evelyn Wing Chair above is a good visual example of this. The primary purpose of the wings was to shield the occupant of the chair from drafts and to trap the heat from the fireplace in the area where the person was sitting. When placed in a bedroom or anywhere for that matter, a wing chair can become the perfect place to snuggle up with a book or listen to calming music before you saunter off to bed.
Nursing Chair
It’s definitely not a bedroom chair when it’s a nursing chair. Not unlike a rocking chair, nursing chairs will sway back and forth and are comfortable for both mum and baby when nursing. They are also essential seating for father and baby too because they can quickly rock them off to the land of nod if the baby wakes distressed. These chairs are usually placed next to a crib in the child’s room or next to the bed in the parent’s bedroom.
Swivel Chair
Swivel chairs are not bedroom chairs but there’s certainly no reason why they can’t be. While a rocking chair rocks back and forth, a swivel chair can rotate 190° or even 360° in some cases. A gentle swivel should never be underestimated, especially when you’re already tired and just need that gentle motion to send you off to snoozeville. In the living room, a swivel chair is almost always the first chair to be taken because it offers something a little more exciting than a regular armchair.
Bench
Benches offer more seating space than bedroom chairs. Usually positioned at the bottom of the bed frame or next to it, a bench can be used for lying out your clothing options for the day or as a place to sit when putting your shoes on. If for some special reason you have breakfast brought up to you in bed, it can also act as a place to rest your breakfast tray. The main purpose of a breakfast bench though is to sit on it, so these shouldn’t be disregarded as only being fit for purpose in the bedroom. A living room or even hallway can also benefit from these and the additional seating they bring.
Cuddler
Is there anything more comfortable than a cuddler armchair? We don’t think so. These chairs are most commonly found in living rooms and large ones at that because they do tend to consume more floor space than a regular armchair, but they’re just so cosy that we don’t really care. These would make a great addition to a bedroom too though because they have a larger than normal seat and as the title suggests will “cuddle” you while you read your favourite novel.
Fireside Chair
Fireside chairs are an absolute must-have in any living room. They are the perfect chair to relax on a cold, dark, winter night next to a crackling fire. No, they are not bedroom chairs, but again would make a great addition to your boudoir. By introducing a small side table into the bedroom too, you could create a little personal space just for you and your morning coffee.
Chesterfield Chair
Chesterfield-style sofas, footstools and armchairs have a very distinctive look that cannot be confused with any other style of armchair. Their deep-buttoning is a stand-out feature that exudes a timeless elegance. Their beauty, whether leather or velvet upholstered, is almost always unchallenged which may be why most people want them displayed in a family room such as a living room. But these chairs can work in a bedroom too and our Adare armchairs could be just what yours is missing.
Did you know that the fourth Earl of Chesterfield - Lord Philip Stanhope, was the first person to commission a Chesterfield sofa? It’s true! It was adeptly named after him and his title. To learn more interesting facts about this furniture style, read; Design Spotlight: The Chesterfield.
Egg Chair
Egg chairs are fast becoming the new “everything” chair. What once was a chair designed specifically for the outdoors has now been welcomed indoors with open arms. We are not complaining though, these chairs provide an encapsulating and comforting feeling with their egg shape, and this makes them almost better than a regular armchair. Egg chairs are perfect for living rooms, conservatories and large bedrooms and can gently sway you when relaxing.

Reading Chair
We are aware that this next alternative is a bit of a stretch. After all, a bedroom chair just as easily could be the perfect bedroom chair because essentially, they are all just armchairs with different designs but it needs to be included regardless. The Relax chair above is similar to a wing chair but has less of a wing, making it just cosy enough to read your kindle before bed or read your hard-back book from cover to cover.
