Paint is one of the most cost-effective ways to give a room an instant makeover. We love paint here at EZ Living Furniture, in fact, we collaborate with one of the biggest paint creators in Ireland and the UK - Crown Paints. Crown has a large colour selection to choose from and we use their high-quality paint daily on our studio walls for our lifestyle photography. But while some will use paint to give their space a freshen-up, what most people don’t know is that it has so many other benefits.
This blog is designed to help those who have no idea how to paint their walls (as much as they might think they do). It will answer the important paint questions such as what can paint do for a room? What walls should I paint? And most of all, what shouldn’t I paint? So, what are you waiting for? Follow our simple paint tips below to create the bedroom, living room, or kitchen of your dreams.
So, What Can Paint Really Do?
Well, besides instantly making over a room, paint can do a lot.
- Paint is the cheapest and easiest way to inject colour into a space.
- It can be used to draw attention to specific areas or features in a room.
- There is minimal preparation time when compared with wallpaper.
- Paint can help to cover walls that are in poor condition.
- When high-quality paint is used, it will typically last twice as long as a less expensive alternative, especially when a primer is used. Primer will make the paint go on smoother and provide better coverage too.
- Most paints dry in a short period of time, which means minimal disruption to your lifestyle.
- Many paints can resist sun, fading, and blistering.
- Paint can be applied to many things, besides walls. It can be used on wood, masonry, metals etc. It is great for upcycling furniture that may have passed its peak. Just remember to purchase a paint specific to your needs.
What Walls Should I Paint?
Well, that all depends on what you want out of the room you are planning to paint.
- If you want to enlarge a room, use light colours on every wall, including the ceiling. White is preferable, but you can also use on-trend shades, such as stone or a greige (grey + beige).
- To make a room feel taller, you will need to use a dark colour on all of the walls excluding the ceiling. By painting the ceiling in a contrasting white colour, you will make the room feel taller, without any permanent structural changes.
- To narrow a space, paint the farthest wall to you in the lightest colour, preferably white. The ceiling also needs to be painted in this colour. You can then use a darker colour on the surrounding walls.
- If you want your space to appear smaller than it is all you need to do is paint the entire room, including the ceiling, in the same dark”ish” colour.
- To lengthen the space, simply do the opposite of the narrowing tip above.
- Extending a space horizontally is difficult, but not impossible. You should paint the upper portions of the surrounding walls in your darker colour, while the lower sections of the walls can be painted with white paint along with the ceiling.
- To shorten your room, simply paint the farthest wall to you in the darkest paint colour. The ceiling and surrounding walls should be painted in the lightest colour i.e. white.
- Demoting the ceiling in a room is easy, just paint the darkest colour on the ceiling of the room. The lower walls should be painted in the lightest colour.
What Shouldn't I Paint?
- As furniture experts, we advise against painting new furniture. Pre-owned furniture that has seen better days? Yes, we’re all for it!
- Do not start painting walls without prepping the space first, i.e., covering all surrounding furniture. In a living room, this means sofas, armchairs, coffee tables etc. Don’t forget to also cover those smaller home accessories, or simply move them to another room.
- Do not start painting without covering the tops of your skirting boards, the outer edges of your light switches and plug sockets with masking tape.
