Did you know that most people will only wear 20% of their clothes, 80% of the time? This means that a lot of our clothing goes unworn and will need to be stored in our bedrooms until the perfect time and occasion arises. Unfortunately, having a larger amount of personal belongings means that reorganising will become a more regular affair.

A bedroom’s function is to be a place of ultimate relaxation and sleep, and let’s be honest, who is able to fully unwind on their bed under a sea of clothing, rubbish, and general bits and bobs? Wouldn’t it be much better to have a bedroom that is completely clutter-free for the entire year? Of course, which is why we have compiled a list of simple tips and tricks that will help to keep your bedroom tidy and organised - at least until you inevitably mess it up again.

Do An Initial Sweep

In order to create a super-clean and serene bedroom environment, you will need to start by doing an initial sweep of the room. Begin by finding and picking up any rubbish in the bedroom. Clothing labels, used makeup pads, and old sweet wrappers can all go into the bin (where they belong). Next, clear any dinnerware from the room. This includes mouldy plates, cups, and bowls that probably should have been removed and brought into the kitchen for cleaning quite some time ago.

Finally, make the bed and make sure that absolutely everything is taken off of it. The bed will become the area on which to carefully access each item.

Start Small & Plan

Start small and focus on one area of the room at a time. For example, choose a bookcase or blanket box full of items to clear out and then lay them on the bed to be organised. You will then need to sort through these pieces and rearrange them into these four piles:

1. Keep

2. Donate

3. Storage

4. Throwaway

In order to organise each object into those four piles, you will need:

1. Storage Boxes

2. Or a way to create separate sections on a floor area - room dividers or items that clearly mark where one section ends and the other begins.

Once you have this and a clear indication of where everything should be placed, it’s time to get started.

Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither was an organised bedroom. If you feel the need to take a break or just deal with one section per day - go for it!

Tackle The Wardrobe & Chest Of Drawers

You will need to be ruthless when it comes to tackling clothing and footwear in your wardrobe and chest of drawers. Don’t be afraid to get stuck in and be honest with yourself about what you don’t wear. Too much clothing will lead to poor/harder decision making every time you open the wardrobe. So the less clothing, the better.

Any clothing that no longer fits or hasn’t been worn in the past year should go into the throwaway box or section. This will help to free up more space in the bedroom. If it’s still in good condition, consider donating it and adding it to this pile instead. Only keep clothes that you truly love and will still fit into.

Dive Into The Dressing Table

Go ahead and start re-organising your dressing table. First, get rid of any empty/out-of-date cosmetic bottles or colognes. Next, use tiny baskets and see-through glass or plastic storage containers to arrange jewellery in one area and skincare in another etc.

A Bedroom Chair & Underbed Storage

A bedroom chair is one of those items of furniture that can be easily forgotten about. After all, it shouldn’t really be used for storing random bits of clothing on and instead must be used for its intended purpose - a comfortable place to sit after a long, hard day. But if like many you are guilty of using it for outfits, then this too must be tackled.

Hidden storage, especially under bed storage can fall between the cracks. Because it is not in plain view and is instead underneath the bed, it can be regularly left out. If you have an ottoman bed that has its storage already separated into drawers, excellent. This has completed half of the task for you. Should your bed contain one large empty compartment, try using dividers and boxes to re-organise everything once it has been carefully picked through.
