Having an outdoor space is one thing, but knowing how to decorate it with garden furniture and accessories is something completely different. Oftentimes, we try so hard to make our homes and gardens look like those from a magazine that we tend to over-accessorise and end up with a clutter-filled area. Believe it or not, we’ve been there too. Still, this guide is all about learning from these common decor mistakes and taking the steps listed below to avoid them. In this EZ Living Furniture blog, you’ll learn how to create a calm, peaceful, and most importantly, clutter-free outdoor environment. So, if you adore your garden or patio and want to make the most out of it while being the envy of all of your neighbours, you’ve come to the right place. Just keep reading below to discover it all!

Everything In Moderation
When people think of clutter-free, they often think of a completely bare, non-furnished, and quite frankly, boring space. That couldn’t be further from the truth. You can still purchase those essential items of furniture and even those smaller accessories for your indoor and outdoor areas. The real power comes from knowing that they look great in moderation. That means purposefully buying only the items of garden furniture that you know you’ll need and use regularly. The same goes for accessories, granted, these are harder to limit, especially because of their relatively low price tag, but that still doesn’t mean you can’t shop smart when choosing them. We suggest picking home accessories that vary in height and textures and can easily group together well in multiple situations.
A Neutral Colour Palette Is Key
It’s easy to go to your local furniture store without a plan and pick things purely based on their appearance and your individual taste. Unfortunately, this is the worst thing you can do when shopping. Going in without a plan or a list can mean that you end up spending more on things you don’t need and truthfully, they never really pair well together. To make sure that you avoid this common shopping mistake, try to choose all of your garden furniture and home accessories in a neutral colour palette. Luckily, a lot of garden dining sets already come in muted colours so all you really need to worry about is your accessories. Sticking to this colour palette will ensure that all of your items work well together and visually, it creates a calm and peaceful environment.
Opt For An Organic & Natural Appearance
Choose wicker, rattan, and woven-styled items of garden furniture for that organic and natural look in your outdoor area. These materials never really go out of style which means they will continue to look timeless far into the future. Wicker furniture with gaps like the Kinvara Egg Chair above is particularly useful. When sitting in it, air can flow through these gaps essentially cooling you down on that hot summer’s day. When not in use, these gaps will give the appearance of more space and reinforces that breezy, clutter-free look.
EZ TIP: Do not forget to cover your garden furniture when not in use. This will help to maintain its appearance.
Invest In Outdoor Storage
If you’re having trouble limiting the number of accessories and cosy bits you are buying for your garden, patio, or balcony, we suggest investing in an outdoor storage box. Better still, choose a garden furniture set that already has in-built storage space under the seats or in the accompanying table. This is the perfect place to store away those cushions and throws when not in use. The one thing we would not suggest scrimping on is accessories that have multiple functions. Throws and cushions will not only keep you warm and cosy but they will also add that all-important finishing touch to your egg chair, bistro set, or garden lounge set.
EZ TIP: If you plan on keeping your garden furniture in a conservatory or indoor space, consider using a dining bench or regular bench with storage in place of purchasing a new garden storage box. The Vintage Oak Storage Bench above has that natural appearance we have advocated too!
Don’t Forget Planters
This step is especially important if you are lacking foliage in or around your outdoor dining space. Patios and balconies could benefit hugely from the addition of a planter or two because they are often situated further away from the lawn and any flowers or plants. The Santa Cruz Planters above can help to finish an outdoor area without overpowering it. The calm and peaceful element will come from the plants or trees you plan to place inside them. We’re not sure about you, but whenever we are around nature or even an indoor pot plant, we just immediately feel more relaxed and at one with nature.

Avoid Tacky Fairy Lights & Plastic Accessories
Don’t get us wrong from the heading, we love fairy lights here and have previously recommended them in another garden blog, but they’re not essential. Yes, they look beautiful at night, but how likely are you to stay outdoors when it starts to get dark? Usually, the temperature will drop around the same time as the daylight does and this will likely mean that you end up heading back indoors for the entire evening. Plastic trees and trellises can also devalue and add clutter to your outdoor space. Think artificial blossom trees that light up or a fake-foliage trellis with light-up flowers. For these reasons, it's best to avoid these items entirely.
