Welcome back to our monthly Do’s & Don’ts Blog! Every month, we review and share insider tips for styling a home to a professional standard with you, our lovely readers. This month, you’ll learn how to style an oval coffee table and an empty corner three ways, and you’ll finally understand what the 60-30-10 rule is, but that’s not all, you can also learn how to pair your lamp with a lamp table. So, let’s begin!
How To Style An Oval Coffee Table
1. Divide your table in two, drawing an imaginary line down the centre.
2. Keep one side for function and height.
3. Use the opposite side for some personality.
4. On the side you want to use for function and height, include a base layer in the form of some decorative books. This will add height.
5. On top of them, place two candle sticks with varying heights, increasing the height even more.
6. Beside your candle sticks, include a decorative tin in which you can hide away smaller items. This will be your function.
7. On the opposite side, use a round bowl and some decorative items to add some personality to the look. You should now have created a visual triangle with your design.
60-30-10 Rule Explained
1. This rule defines the percentage of colours required for each room design.
2. 60% of a room’s colour should be reserved for your dominant colour. Neutral tones should be used here as these are the colours you will see the most of.
3. 30% should be kept for your complimentary colours, these will blend well with your dominant colours above. Think black.
4. The remaining 10% is your accent colour. Typically, you will use this colour in your accessories. A great example of your accent colour is a beautiful green shade.
One Corner - Three Ways
1. Try styling your empty corner in these three ways - 1. Use a stylish unit or console.
2. Create a quiet corner with an armchair, if you have remaining space, pair it with a footstool and/or side table.
3. Design an artistic feature wall by using large, neutral-shaded wall art.
How To Pair Your Lamp & Lamp Table
1. Your first thought when pairing your lamp with a lamp table is to match those that are similar in shape i.e. a table with a thin base and a narrow lamp. Don’t do it!
2. Instead, pair it with a lamp that contrasts in shape. For instance, a table lamp with a round, thick base would be best paired with a table lamp that has a thin base.
Now that you have all the tips needed to style your home to a professional standard, you can get started on creating the home of your dreams.
