Christmas is just around the corner, which means it’s time to start thinking about ways to improve your holiday decor. One of the most important items that no home should be without is a Christmas tree, and without the proper research, you could end up decorating yours in the worst way possible. Whether you decided on an artificial tree or opted for the real thing, there are ways that you can turn a perfectly good tree into an eyesore...well, that was, until now. To help you, EZ Living Furniture has put together a list of 5 decorating tips to avoid when setting up your tree. So, if your tree is already up and not wowing as it should, it could be because of one of these mistakes below!
1. Ignoring Broken Lights
We know, we know, this is kind of an obvious one, but you’d be surprised at how many people are still using the same broken lights year after year. Whether it’s just a few bulbs that aren’t working or the infrequency with which they flicker, a functioning set of string lights for the tree is an absolute must. Set aside some time to check that your string lights are fully working before wrapping them around your tree, and if they aren’t, start shopping for some new ones.
EZ TIP: Plug in your string lights and work from the bottom up, finishing at the top, to create a wonderfully even display of lights. Don’t forget to weave in and out of branches to give that expert look.
2. Neglecting Tree Fluffing
While this particular point is specific to artificial trees only, it’s still important. Without perfectly fluffed branches, your tree will look flat, lacklustre, and not to mention, full of gaps. This is an incredibly important step in creating a beautiful-looking tree. Begin with the lowest branches and work your way up. You’ll need to fluff each branch individually, but we promise you, it’ll be worth it. Pull the inner sections towards the trunk, the middle sections out straight, and the outer sections angled slightly upward to create a fuller appearance. Keep repeating this process layer by layer until you reach the top.
3. Not Using Sprays
Many of us will admit that baubles tend to be the go-to tree decoration for Christmas, and while they have their purpose, so do sprays. Not using sprays (or picks, as they are also known as) can mean that your tree looks bare, visually flat, and even gappy. Sprays are great for covering gaps and adding depth and interest to the entire look of the tree. And these incredibly powerful Christmas accessories are also available in an array of different styles and lengths, so you won’t have any problem finding some to match your Christmas theme. The Gold Curl Stem Christmas Spray above is one of our favourites, but there are lots of styles and embellishments to choose from, including but not limited to berries, pinecones, pearls, and flowers.

4. Using All Of Your Baubles On Your Tree
Baubles are a must-have for any Christmas tree display, but the mistake most people make when it comes to their baubles is using every single one on the tree. Just because you have lots of baubles in various shapes and colours accumulated from years of decorating, it doesn’t mean they all have to be used. By covering the tree in every single bauble you own, and this generally tends to be a lot, you will end up with a tree that likely looks mismatched and overwhelming. Here at EZ Living Furniture, we are big believers in using accessories in ways that some people might find unusual. Every Christmas, we advocate for using baubles in a bowl to create a decorative display on a sideboard, coffee table, or dining table. So, if you have more decorations than your tree needs, try displaying them in a bowl or hanging them from a garland across a mantlepiece instead.
5. Using The Same Shape & Coloured Baubles
Buying multipacks of baubles is a great way to lessen the cost this time of year. Typically, baubles sold in packs tend to cost less than those sold singularly, but the one problem with buying packs of baubles is that it means you end up with the same shape and colour throughout your tree display and usually more than is needed. To spice things up and create a truly eye-catching tree design, variety is key. Invest in a few additional baubles that vary in size and shape from what you already have, but are complementary in colour. Just remember, you don’t need to use the entire pack of baubles either!

6. Forgetting The Finishing Touches
So, your tree is fluffed and embellished with baubles, bows, sprays, and whatever else you decided to include in your tree display, but it still looks a bit meh, and there’s probably a reason why. It’s likely you’ve forgotten to add those finishing touches, such as a tree topper and skirt. A tree skirt not only hides the stand of your tree, which can look a tad unsightly, but also can be used to add that extra something to your display. A faux fur option is our preferred choice as it not only adds that luxurious finishing touch but also visual appeal and incredible texture. Next, focus on your tree topper. Whether it’s an angel that has seen better days or a newly purchased twinkling star, the impact adding a topper makes is incredible.
EZ TIP: Don’t have a tree topper? Use a few Christmas sprays instead. This unique addition acts well as a replacement for a traditional tree topper and will immediately draw the eye as well, as many compliments
