Question 1

Are velvet sofas suitable for high-traffic living rooms?

Accepted Answer

They can be suitable for high-traffic areas, but choosing darker tones or textured finishes helps disguise minor wear, as lighter velvets may show usage more visibly.

Question 2

Does velvet feel warm compared to other fabrics?

Accepted Answer

Yes, velvet feels soft and warm to the touch, making it particularly comfortable in cooler Irish climates.

Question 3

How do I clean a velvet sofa properly?

Accepted Answer

To clean a velvet sofa properly, you should vacuum it weekly with a soft brush attachment, blot spills immediately, and avoid excessive water saturation. You should also use a fabric brush to lift the pile if it becomes crushed and always follow the manufacturer's care instructions.

Question 4

Is velvet a durable upholstery choice?

Accepted Answer

Yes, velvet is a durable choice provided it has a strong backing and a high rub count. Many velvet sofas today are designed specifically for domestic durability rather than delicate display use.

Question 5

Do velvet sofas fade in sunlight?

Accepted Answer

Prolonged direct sunlight can cause fading over time. Positioning the sofa away from windows, while using blinds can help preserve the vibrancy of the colour.

Question 6

Will a velvet sofa show pressure marks or shading?

Accepted Answer

Yes, velvet has a natural pile that reflects light differently depending on the direction, which can create shading or 'tracking' marks. These are normal and part of the character of velvet.

Question 7

What is the difference between cotton velvet and synthetic velvet?

Accepted Answer

Cotton velvet feels luxurious but can mark more easily, while polyester or blended velvet offers better durability, stain resistance, and colour retention. Most modern velvet sofas use performance-enhanced blends.

Question 8

Does velvet stain easily?

Accepted Answer

Velvet can show marks if liquid spills are left untreated; however, many contemporary velvet fabrics are treated for stain resistance. You should blot spills immediately rather than rubbing them to prevent fibre damage.

Question 9

Are velvet sofas practical for everyday use?

Accepted Answer

Modern velvet sofas are far more durable than traditional velvet because most use synthetic blends with high rub counts, making them suitable for everyday family use provided spills are cleaned promptly.

Question 10

Can I combine a 2 seater with other sofa sizes?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A common Irish layout includes: 3 seater + 2 seater, 2 seater + armchair, or 2 seater + footstool. This provides flexibility while maintaining visual balance.

Question 11

How long should a 2 seater sofa last?

Accepted Answer

A quality hardwood-framed 2 seater should last at least 7–15 years, depending on usage and upholstery. Regular cushion rotation significantly improves longevity.

Question 12

Should I choose fabric or leather for a 2 seater?

Accepted Answer

For smaller rooms: Fabric adds softness and warmth Leather reflects light and can make compact rooms feel slightly more open households with pets often prefer durable woven fabrics or protected leather.

Question 13

What is the ideal seat height for a 2 seater?

Accepted Answer

Seat height typically ranges from 45–60 cm. 45–55 cm supports upright posture 60 cm+ allows relaxed lounging Your height and sitting style should guide this choice.

Question 14

Is a 2 seater sofa big enough for everyday use?

Accepted Answer

Yes — a 2 seater comfortably seats two adults for daily use. It works particularly well in apartments, smaller sitting rooms, or as part of a larger seating arrangement paired with a 3 seater or armchair.

Question 15

What size is a standard 2 seater sofa in Ireland?

Accepted Answer

Most 2 seater sofas measure between 140–180 cm wide, with an average depth of 85–100 cm. Always check both width and depth, especially in compact Irish living rooms where space planning is crucial.

Question 16

What does “rub count” mean in fabric sofas?

Accepted Answer

Rub count, often measured using the Martindale test, indicates durability where 15,000–25,000 signifies light domestic use, 25,000–40,000 indicates general domestic use, and 40,000+ suggests heavy domestic use. Higher rub counts generally mean better resistance to wear.

Question 17

Are fabric sofas good for homes with pets?

Accepted Answer

Yes, fabric sofas are good for homes with pets if you choose tightly woven fabrics that resist claw snags and avoid loose weaves. Mid-tone colours also help disguise minor marks and pet hair better than very light or very dark shades.

Question 18

Will fabric sofas fade in sunlight?

Accepted Answer

Prolonged direct sunlight can cause fading over time, especially in darker colours. To prevent this, position sofas away from strong south-facing windows where possible or use blinds to reduce UV exposure. Polyester fabrics are more resistant to fading, but will still fade after prolonged expesure to sunlight.

Question 19

Do fabric sofas stain easily?

Accepted Answer

Staining depends on the weave and treatment of the material. Performance fabrics and synthetic blends resist staining better than natural fibres, and applying a fabric protector such as Guardsman can add extra protection.

Accepted Answer

Most modern fabrics are designed for easy maintenance, needing only weekly vacuuming with a soft brush attachment and immediate blotting of spills. Some models include removable cushion covers for easier cleaning, but you should always follow manufacturer care guidelines.

Question 22

How do I choose the right size sofa for my living room?

Accepted Answer

Start by measuring your available space and room depth. Leave at least 90 cm clearance for walkways and 40–45 cm between the sofa and coffee table if you have one. In many Irish new-build homes, living rooms range between 3.2–4.5 metres wide, so oversized sofas can quickly dominate the space.

Question 23

What is the standard depth of a sofa?

Accepted Answer

Most sofas range between 85–100 cm deep. 85–90 cm suits upright sitting, 95–110 cm offers deeper lounging comfort. If you prefer stretching out or taller household members are using it, a deeper seat (55–65 cm seat depth) is often more comfortable.

Question 24

What is the difference between fixed-back and scatter-back sofas?

Accepted Answer

High-back sofas offer a cleaner, more structured look and require less daily maintenance. Pillow-back sofas provide a softer, relaxed aesthetic but require regular cushion plumping to maintain shape. Your choice depends on styling preference and how much upkeep you’re comfortable with.

Question 25

Which sofa material is most durable for family homes?

Accepted Answer

Durability depends on construction and fabric rating. Performance polyester is great for resisting staining and fading, especially from sunlight. Leather is long-lasting and easy to wipe clean, while velvet offers luxury but may require more maintenance.
For busy Irish households with children or pets, tightly woven fabrics or protected leather are often safest.

Question 26

How long should a good quality sofa last?

Accepted Answer

Question 27

What cushion filling is best: foam, fibre, or feather?

Accepted Answer

High-density foam offers firm support and shape retention. Fibre-filled cushions feel softer but may flatten quicker. Feather blends provide luxury softness but require regular plumping. Your ideal option depends on comfort preference and maintenance tolerance.
