It’s that time of year again. The days are getting progressively colder and the evenings are becoming much shorter. To help combat one of these problems, the clocks are going back. Every year, since it was first implemented in Germany on the 1st of May, 1916 as an effort to save energy during World War I, we have seen Daylight Saving Time (DST) become part of our yearly lives. The typical implementation of DST is to set the clocks forward by one hour in the spring and to set the clocks back by one hour in the autumn. This year, the clocks will go back an hour at 2am on the final Sunday in October. The 30th of October will see us gain an extra hour in our schedules and we couldn’t be more excited. Finding ourselves with an extra bit of time has, unsurprisingly, led us to put together a list of activities that can be achieved within these 60 minutes. From reading a book to getting lost in nature, EZ Living Furniture has compiled a list of 10 things that you can easily do in one hour.
1. Sleep
It's ok to use the extra hour for a little more shut-eye. Sometimes we can become so preoccupied with using any spare time for productive tasks such as hiking, learning a new skill, or signing up for an activity that we forget that it's ok to just relax. Did you know that sleep is just as important as a healthy, balanced diet? Well, it is, and you shouldn't ever feel guilty about having a quick nap throughout the day or using a spare hour to recharge. After all, an extra hour of rest could be just what you need to give you that get-up-and-go you seem to be lacking lately. Your body could be trying to tell you that you are a little run down and this extra time in bed could help to get you back to normal.
If you are the type of person who likes to fill any spare time with something productive, that's ok too. Each to their own, as they say. The activities listed below will help to inspire you and use your extra 60 minutes effectively.
2. Catch Up On Some Reading
There is no end to the number of benefits that reading can bring to your life. Not only does reading expand your creativity, but it also helps you to build a diverse vocabulary. Use your 60 minutes to strengthen your fluency in reading and allow your imagination to blossom. After all, a book can let you travel without moving your feet.
3. Get Lost In Nature
Sometimes all you really need is to get outside. Some fresh air and a cold, brisk walk can reinvigorate you if you are feeling tired and unmotivated. Should you feel like taking it slow, that’s ok too, a slower pace will allow you to take in your surroundings more.
4. Learn A New Language
You can do a lot in an hour including learning a new language. Unfortunately, 60 minutes is not enough time for most of us to become fluent in an unfamiliar dialect, but you can at least get started. On average, a person can learn up to 20 new words and 10 phrases in one short hour.
5. Dedicate Your Time To Self Care
Self-care is different for everyone. For some it might look like a long soak in a bubble bath, for others, it might be re-arranging furniture in their homes to reflect Feng Shui so they can feel more "zen" at home.
Whatever you choose to do, make sure you are doing it to promote your own physical, mental and emotional health.
It might just be time to schedule that full-body massage you’ve been putting off for half a year.
6. Try Meditation
Speaking of self-care, one surefire way to focus on yourself and your spirituality is to start meditating. This might allow you to develop a deeper sense of meaning, understanding, or connection with the universe. Even if this is not something you are interested in achieving, meditation can also help you to just take time away from the worries and stresses of everyday life. Sitting in silence can do wonders for your mental health.
7. Join A Class
Most classes only last for one hour, so why not use your extra 60 minutes to learn how to bake a cake or create your own clay pot? Scheduling a one-hour class each week will give you something to look forward to. You can expand your creativity and make new friends in the process. It can also turn an uninteresting and mundane week into something exciting.
8. Meal-Prep For The Week Ahead
Have you ever used the excuse “I just don’t have the time” to put off something you have been absolutely dreading? I think it’s safe to say that everyone has used this for meal-prepping. Well, not anymore. With that extra hour, you can put together a whole host of exciting and flavoursome dinners or lunches.
9. Workout, Yoga, Or Both
Why not start your day off with a bend and stretch? With your extra 60 minutes, you could take a yoga class to lift your mind, body and spirit, or visit the local gym.
10. Volunteer Your Time
Sometimes it’s easy to become selfish and preoccupied with our own lives. An hour is just enough time to re-evaluate what is most important in this world and start giving back to those less fortunate. Consider helping a local homeless centre or dog shelter with that extra time you now find yourself with.
