Is there anything more luxurious than genuine leather furniture? We don’t think so. It creates the ultimate illusion of grandeur in the home and isn’t just style over substance as it is incredibly comfortable too! Available in a wide selection of grades, colours, and styles, knowing how to care for your particular piece is difficult to establish though, especially when you’ve never had an item of leather furniture before. It’s not as if you can just wipe it down with a household cleaner (please don’t do this). No, it takes time and effort but the ultimate payoff is that it will remain with you for years to come. If you choose not to look after your genuine leather items, you shouldn't be surprised to see the below damage occurring over time.

Cracking.

Fading.

Discolouration.

Scratches.

Odours.

Of course, if you want to prevent any of that from happening, EZ Living Furniture is here to help! We've made it as easy as possible for you to look after your leather by listing easy cleaning and care tips below that you can follow!

Genuine Leather Cleaning Tips

Maintaining your leather item is important. It means your leather pieces will continue to look good for years to come. Here we have listed some essential cleaning tips that you should follow to keep your leather looking its best.

1. As with all materials, dust and debris can gather on leather furniture. To remove this, simply use the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner and a low suction. If you allow dust to sit for too long, it can cause wear if not vacuumed.

2. Invest in some leather cleaning wipes. You will only need to use these on your leather items occasionally. For instance, a leather sofa could benefit from being cleaned with these 3-4 times per year. The best thing about these wipes though is that they will also add moisture and a protective barrier to your leather furniture.

3. Grit can gather in the crevices of your leather furniture. Ignoring this (like dust) can mean that it becomes abrasive and can lead to irreparable damage. Use a barely damp cloth to remove this.

4. Removing stains from leather is easy - if you get to it quickly. For instance, grease and wine spills can be removed easily using a lightly dampened cloth. If leather wipes have been used occasionally as recommended above, you will have created a barrier so stains won’t absorb into the leather.

5. Ink sounds like it would be a little more difficult to remove but it actually isn’t, if you have a leather cleaning kit at your disposal. In it, you’ll find a specific wipe for only removing ink stains.

6. You can prevent scratching from occurring on your leather if you add a protective barrier to it. You can do this by using your leather cleaning wipes. Alternatively, a moisturiser can be used to keep your leather clean, soft, and supple. A leather moisturiser comes as part of most leather cleaning kits. Using this will also create that protective barrier for scratches.

Genuine Leather Care Tips

Here, we have included some general care tips that could cause damage if you aren’t aware of them. By following the below tips, you will decrease the chances of cuts and abrasions to your leather pieces.

1. Remove any sharp objects you might have on you which could cut or scratch your leather items. Pay particular attention to jeans, belt buckles, combs, etc., on/in your pockets.

2. Use a cover whenever possible to protect your leather from everyday hair and beauty products. Many cosmetics and detergents are acidic which can stain and degrade leather. Don’t forget to also wash your hands after using/applying any of these products if you intend on sitting on or touching your leather items.

3. Certain clothing/materials can lose their colour and transfer onto leather, essentially dying them. Just be mindful of this when sitting on a leather armchair or sofa.

4. We love our furry friends, but unfortunately, their claws can scratch the surface of our leather. To prevent this from happening, we recommend using a throw or cover under them to protect your leather and gather pet hair. Alternatively, you could also invest in an elasticated sofa or armchair cover, if you worry about a blank or throw moving around.

That’s A lot Of information, Right?

So here’s the summary:

1. Invest in a leather cleaning kit and you’ll be glad you did. This will include cleaning wipes and/or a leather moisturiser.

2. Do not use chemical cleaners including baby wipes on your leather.

3. Use covers whenever possible to decrease the likelihood of any damage occurring.

5. Keep your leather items away from direct sunlight as this will cause them to dry out quicker and potentially lead to damage.
