To cultivate a real sense of optimism, they say it is best to have something to look forward to. With this in mind and with Summer already upon us, we want to draw your attention to the outdoors. Most specifically to your gardens. Because what is more enticing than unwinding in a beautifully maintained and re-decorated green space with the scent of fresh-cut grass in the air? Nothing…. that’s what.

A garden, patio or balcony are important areas of our homes that are not always appreciated until the day the sun decides to make an appearance. They’re an extension of our homes which if large enough can also cater to a number of family events including BBQs throughout the year. And this is one of many great reasons to get prepared in advance.

Still, there are many things to consider when creating your dream backyard in preparation for a relaxing day or a summer BBQ. Luckily, EZ Living Furniture has done the hard work for you and compiled some top tips into one handy, go-to guide that will serve you for years to come.

First and foremost –

The Weather

Unfortunately, we do not reside in a country that is known for its sunny weather. Irish summers are infamous, one minute the sun is splitting the stones, the next it’s pouring rain, and then finally it starts snowing...we wish we were joking. Ok, maybe not snowing…but it is never frequently warm or dry.

The weather is a very important element to consider when decorating or entertaining in your outdoor area. Furniture or features such as a garden umbrella or an awning can help if the weather does turn from sun to rain.

Old garden bench

Garden Furniture

Every year we regret not investing more time and money into our outdoor furniture. We sit, cross-legged on an old weather-worn bench with 10 other family members and worry that if we move by one inch it may collapse entirely. Bean bags are even more unstable, so don’t even think about sitting in one of those unless you wish to embarrass yourself further in front of guests. But have no fear, Rattan garden furniture is here!

Its versatile and lightweight design means that it looks great inside or outside and can be stored with ease. If left outdoors and uncovered indefinitely (like my neglected rubbish bins), you need only worry about removing the padded chair cushions in anticipation of the weather. It’s a win-win.

Landscape Design

Don’t forget to look at the bigger picture. Water features, fountains and even garden sheds can be an excellent focal point in your garden and an opening talking point at a family function. Yet when placed in a garden with very little space it can consume an entire area and become an eyesore for all.

Pinterest is a useful imaging platform that can help you to visualise your final landscape design. By printing garden products and materials from Pinterest and arranging them on a piece of paper you can get a better sense of how your space is going to look overall (A.K.A a mood board). This can also assist you in staying on top of upcoming trends.

Outdoor Heating

If outdoor entertaining is your thing, it can now continue long into the night if you invest in outdoor heating. With many effective options available including gas, electric and solid-fuel patio heaters, research is definitely key before making your final decision.

That being said, a fire pit is easily the most Instagrammable and can bring the most ambience to your evening (and photographs). Not only will your toes thank you but so will your stomach because a fire pit can also toast snacks like marshmallows or chestnuts. Speaking of food….

Food & Drink

We won’t insult you by claiming to be food or wine connoisseurs. Here at EZ Living, we live, breathe and sleep furniture, however, for BBQ-friendly cuisine and refreshments, we thought it best to turn to the experts.

Thomas Woodberry’s is a Galway-based winery that has generously shared its wine knowledge with us. I can assure you that their expertise extends past Chianti…which I hear is best paired with some fava beans and liver? Read: Best BBQ Wine Pairings here!

When it comes to food, burgers are a staple for most barbeque dining and when cooked correctly and not burned to a crisp by yours truly can be very tasty. Or so I hear? Read: BBQ Friendly Food For Garden Dining here!
