EZ Living Furniture is delighted to partner with MADRA for February/March 2021. MADRA is a local charity committed to rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming abandoned dogs. This shelter understands the needs of all breeds of neglected, under-socialised and abused dogs. They also arrange several fundraising events throughout the year to help raise much-needed funds for their rescue dogs. Clearly, not all heroes wear capes.

As a family-owned (and dog-loving) business, EZ Living Furniture jumped at the opportunity to fundraise for such a hard-working organisation. It also got us thinking about our canine companions and their history.

In truth, humans and dogs share a bond like no other. We have been living together for 14,000 years (give or take) and the adoration we have for our furry friends has only grown stronger. With every passing decade, we become more aware of a dog’s requirements. However, being from two different species, our opinions vary on what comfort is and where it is to be found in the home. This is why we consulted MADRA’s qualified dog trainer, Carrie Hoade to seek some dog-friendly advice on sharing your home with man’s best friend.

Should Dogs Be Allowed On The Furniture?

“It’s really a matter of personal preference, but I think there’s nothing better than curling up on the sofa with your dog after a long day at work. If you don’t want your dog on the furniture, that’s ok too, it just means you must teach your dog where you would like them to hang out instead.”

Carrie also stresses the importance of agreeing as a family when deciding if you want your dog on your furniture or not. This ensures that everyone will be consistent when it comes to training and dogs will know what is expected of them.

How Can We Teach Our Dogs Where We Would Like Them To Hang Out?

Carrie recommends reward-based training to teach our dogs where we want them to hang out. “Whether that is on their own comfy bed or on the sofa, you can use their favourite food to “pay” them for going to their own areas of rest. If you make it worth their while to be there, they’ll be only too happy to hang out where the good stuff is delivered. Don’t scold or punish your dogs for going where you don’t want them to.”

Carrie says dogs seek warm, cosy places to sleep and suggests giving them several comfy beds to choose from in several different spots throughout your home. She also urges anyone having difficulty with this training to contact a reputable, qualified positive reinforcement dog trainer for advice.

What Are The Best Pet-Friendly Materials For Furniture In Our Homes?

Wipeable fabrics are a good choice, as are fabrics with strong finishes such as tweed,

faux suede, or polyester. Though, if you are still unsure, Carrie encourages dog owners to consult the experts (that’s us). “Have a chat with the EZ Living team to help find that perfect sofa for you and your dog to snuggle on.”

You can also add some stylish covers and throws to place on your sofa, so you can enjoy being curled up with your dog, without worrying about pet hair. “Find versions that are easy to wash and tumble-dry, to minimise fuss and effort”.

Is Grooming Essential & How Often Should Our Dogs Be Groomed?

Regular grooming is essential for your dog’s welfare and Carrie advises professionally grooming our dogs from the very beginning. It is a good idea to get your puppy or dog comfortable with the grooming process from the start as their nails will also need to be regularly trimmed for their comfort.”

Visiting a professional groomer regularly will also help to protect your furniture!

How Can We Treat Our Dogs Like Royalty?

You can invest in a piece of furniture specifically for your pooch. Our EZ Living Furniture experts recommend the Baxter, Harper or Caoimhe ranges of sofas or armchairs.

A large selection of dog toys and treats can also be found at Petworld. It couldn’t be simpler!

Dogs are an important member of any family and can greatly enrich our lives. An extra bit of hoovering is a very small price to pay for the unconditional love that is offered in return. And if you’re like me, you’ll probably shed more than the dogs!

Do we need to say more? If you find yourself currently dog-less and can welcome one into your home, then look no further than www.madra.ie. Here you will find several rescue dogs seeking loving homes. Always remember, Adopt, don’t shop!
