The perfect study area plays a vital role in a child’s studies. In fact, it has been proven that a carefully curated space can positively affect how someone absorbs new information. So, in theory, the environment in which you carry out those homework tasks in the home can make a big difference. Too many of us, including parents, will downplay the importance of an ergonomic office chair or a suitably high desk. To avoid the pitfalls of an unsuitable workspace, EZ Living Furniture has compiled a blog listing the essentials needed to create an organised and functional study space at home. - just in time for back to school!
1. Desk
Instead of taking over the sofa and balancing books on your lap, invest in a suitable desk for your bedroom or office space. A good office desk can make a major difference in comfort and focus. Our pick is the beautiful Renvyle Desk above. It provides just enough storage space with its two drawers for copies and stationery and it can fit in most small rooms. Crafted from a beautiful oak, its surface is incredibly robust. This desk is multipurpose because it would work well as a study desk and a home office desk.
2. Office Chair
A good office chair means less back pain, but it can also mean that you end up spending hundreds more than you expected. For instance, ergonomic office chairs focus on pelvic positioning, lumbar support, and other features that help reduce strain on your body over time. So, it should come as no surprise to learn that they don’t come cheap. If you’re on a tight budget and don’t expect to be sitting on your chair for long periods, a basic office chair (without the frills) might suffice. At a push, even a dining chair would work (I mean, we all managed during Covid didn’t we?), but this isn’t something we would recommend long term. Instead, opt for an ergonomic office chair or a basic one that combines comfort and style and is height adjustable. You must ensure that the chair you purchase can alter to your height and the height of the desk you choose to pair with it.This is incredibly important for posture. Our pick above is the Gain Office Chair (pictured above). It’s both comfortable and height adjustable, what more could you want except for maybe swivel wheels to move around with ease, in which case, may we suggest our Ottowa Office Chair?
3. Desk Lamp
We’ve all been there working into the long hours, crouched over a book or a keyboard. We eventually look up to realise that the sun has gone in and while a main ceiling light can help illuminate what we need, a table lamp is still essential to our needs. Our pick is the Husk Table Lamp. This is the perfect desk lamp as it can be adjusted to direct light where you need it the most. Its minimalistic design also means that it doesn’t consume much space surface space, making it ideal for even those smaller desks. The Husk Lamp is sure to be the perfect addition to any office space or bedroom-come-study!
4. Clock
This might seem like an odd accessory to feature on the list, but it’s important for a number of reasons. Placing a clock on the wall of a home office or study space can mean you don’t go over your allocated study time or indeed your established working hours. Clocks hold people accountable and it’s easy to set yourself a goal with a clock. While you could argue that you have a digital clock on the phone, keeping your phone close to your workspace can mean that you end up procrastinating and/or getting distracted. Clocks are relatively inexpensive but are incredibly valuable in what they can bring to a study area.
5. Plants
Plants are essential for a study area. They can filter indoor air, remove toxic pollutants, and are mental health boosters. Research also suggests that being in the presence of a real plant has been shown to improve attention and concentration. When choosing between the types of real plants, just make sure to pick varieties that are safe for pets and children. And of course, there is always the option of picking an artificial plant alternative but unfortunately, it won’t offer the same health benefits as the real thing.
6. Stationery
You can’t have an effective study area without at least some stationery. Invest in some pens, post-it notes, folders, and organisational desk storage including letter trays. Although a relatively inexpensive set of purchases, you’ll be glad you did because an unorganised workspace is distracting. You know what they say “an organised desk is an organised mind” or at least that’s what we’ve made up. So, if you want to achieve the best results in your exams, the small step of keeping your surface tidy could actually help you concentrate and thus increase your scores.
7. Candle or Scent Diffuser
Introducing nice aromas to a space can make a big difference in how you study/work. A stuffy workplace can mean that you are unable to concentrate and while opening up a window to get a bit of fresh air into the space can do wonders, so can a candle or scent diffuser. Candles and diffusers are stocked in a large variety of fragrances, so make sure to choose one with a neutral scent to not overwhelm your study area.
Now that you know the most essential items for your study area, you can spend the rest of your time well….studying!
