Virtually The Best Christmas Ever!

Virtually The Best Christmas Ever!

Virtually The Best Christmas Ever!

Christmas is headed our way and before long it will be time to put up the decorations, baste the turkey, deck the halls and leave out the mince pies, carrots and milk. It would normally be a fun and hectic time, parents and grandparents trying desperately to keep a lid on all the excitement with children being constantly reminded that “Santa’s watching!!”.

Usually, at this time of year, we would also be looking forward to seeing relatives or friends that we may not have seen in person for some time. Loved ones that live far away or abroad, and family that can only come home for special occasions. Often it’s a time for tears of joy, hugs and kisses. A time when a warm embrace can banish the cold outside.

This Christmas will be unlike any other, and not for the right reasons. COVID-19 has changed everything. It’s quite likely that this year there will be fewer friends, family, and neighbours dropping in for drinks, chat and the inevitable sing-song. It’s also quite likely that our loved ones that live some distance away will not be able to visit, whether it’s due to quarantine rules, or local lockdown limitations. All of this can end up having an adverse effect on our well-being and mental health, things we all need to be especially aware of this year.

But does this mean that we will not be able to share this Christmas with our loved ones at all? Absolutely not.

EZ Living Furniture is a family-run business and for that very reason, we understand how important it is for family and friends to come together, however possible, during this festive season.

We thought we would put together this simple guide on how you can have virtually your best Christmas ever! (See what I did there?).

Preparation:

  • Decide in advance who you want to see and share Christmas with. It doesn’t have to just be one person, it can be many individuals or entire families! Just think, dinner for 20 with no extra clean up!!
  • Be aware of any time differences and choose a time that suits everyone. You may need to be a bit more flexible this year when it comes to what time dinner is served or what time the presents get opened…(I’ll leave explaining that to the kids if Auntie Margaret in Canada wants to see them opening their gifts at 10 am her time...which is 6 pm Irish time!).
  • Choose your platform, Facetime, WhatsApp, Zoom or Skype are all great options. If you haven’t used them before, play around with them for a bit beforehand and get acquainted with how everything works...or better yet, grab the nearest 13-year-old to set it all up for you. Remember to share any passcodes to the meeting if necessary, but not with strangers as you don’t want your party to be invaded by cyber-gate-crashers.
  • Play with fun ideas such as setting a place at the dining table and putting your laptop or tablet there, facing everyone at the table. You could play games after dinner, in your living room, sitting comfortably on your sofa with the laptop on your coffee table. You won’t have to miss out on the annual game of Trivial Pursuit. Speaking of Trivial Pursuit…

Fun Games That You Can Play Online With Friends & Family:

  • Board Games: Quiz games like Trivial Pursuit can be played easily and only need one copy of the game in most cases. You can appoint a dedicated question master. If you and your virtual guest both have the same games, then you could also play family favourites such as Monopoly or Snakes and Ladders, but we will not be responsible for any family fallouts that may happen!
  • Pictionary: This can be great to play online. The chaos as you try to guess what your cousin in New York is drawing within the allowed time is so much fun. If you want, you can also take your Pictionary to the next level with this EZ Tip….if you have a white or light plain wall...cover it with cling film, or shrink wrap. This will allow you to draw on your wall like a giant whiteboard and use a dry-erase marker to easily wipe away unwanted master-pieces.
  • Charades: This may be an oldie but it is still great family fun. Watch your loved ones become progressively less loved as they fail to guess your obvious and clear mime describing “The Great British Bake-Off”.
  • Bingo: There are any number of bingo number generators available online. In addition to this, there are card generators that you can distribute to your friends and family through email or SMS and let the fun begin!!!
  • Riddle Me This Scavenger Hunt: This is a game that will take a bit of preparation on both sides in advance. Riddles can be thought up, if you’re the creative type, or found online. There are plenty of options. Everyone takes turns reciting a riddle that describes a household object. Whoever finds one the fastest earns a point.

This Christmas will be different, but it doesn’t mean that we cannot make the best of a challenging situation. We are lucky in a sense, that with all the technology at our disposal it has never been easier to connect with people. But if you are finding it difficult this Christmas, don’t be afraid to talk to someone. Children too can feel quite vulnerable and anxious around Christmas time.  Many will have found forming social bonds difficult after long periods of lockdown and it’s possible they could do with talking to someone about it.

Below is a list of contact details should you wish to reach to someone to talk to.

From all of us here at EZ Living Furniture, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Healthy New Year.
