How to Clear Out Your Wardrobe for Summer

The evening’s are finally getting longer! And that means one thing, Summer is well and truly on it’s way, and at EZ Living, we’re in preparation mode. In particular, we’re focusing on tidying up our wardrobes and in this post, we are showing you how you can achieve this goal too! Read on where we give you our tips on how to clear out your wardrobe for Summer.

Take the Time

Nothing beats a good clear out, especially the feeling afterwards. It’s as though a weight has been lifted off your shoulders, as the Winter months can leave behind a big build up of clothing items that we simply don’t need come Summer time. Specifically, wardrobes full to the brim of cosy knits and thick jumpers. However, taking part in the throwing out process requires actually setting aside time for this task. Depending on the amount of clothing in your wardrobes, it will take at least two to three hours of your time. If you can at all, try and start your clear out when you have some time to yourself in the house so there’s no distractions from other people.

Empty it Out

Like a painter, you will want a blank canvas to start out with. So, first things first, remove all items currently in your wardrobe; clothes, bags, shoes, hangers, etc, the whole works! The thought of this may be horrifying, but we promise it will make things easier in the long run.

Try It, Decide It, Bag It

Here you will need at least three bags or boxes (depending on the amount of clothes/shoes/bags you own). One bag or box will be for any repairs or items that need to be dry cleaned, one for items that you no longer need that are still in good condition and can be sold, and one for donation to your local charity shop!

A good place to move onto next (once you have assigned your bags and boxes) is to try all items of clothing on and think long and hard about whether you actually need or like them anymore. Simply ask yourself: How often do I really wear this? Does it still fit me well? Is it still in fashion or is it still my style? If the answer to any of these questions is ‘no’, then it’s time to toss it!

The only way to get through this part of the process is by being completely remorseless. Only hold on to key pieces that you really love to wear, that you feel comfortable in, and that are still in good condition. Of course, there are those sentimental or special occasion pieces that should be carefully stored away for when you need them again.

Organise It

You’re nearly there. You’ve cleared out your wardrobe, and left it so that only the summer essentials are what need to be put back in. Take some time and think of exactly how  you want to organise your clothes in your wardrobe. There are many options, such as arranging them by colour, workwear opposed to casual/day wear. You could arrange them by putting matching pieces or outfits together, or all similar items such as pants, skirts, dresses, tops/jumpers together side by side. The choice of how to arrange your wardrobe is up to you, think about what best suits your needs, or exactly how you would like it to look.

After two weeks or so, have another look at your wardrobe and re-assess if everything that is in it is definitely what you want or need in there. If necessary, do another small cull. Organizing your wardrobe properly will also give you a better idea of the style of clothing you want to continue buying and will help you identify any pieces that you are missing from your collection!

Well Done Me

Now you can relax, and look at your wardrobe all cleared out, so congratulate yourself on a job well done! You will hopefully be left with key clothing pieces that you really love, that you will actually wear over the summer months and possibly have made some space for some new bits!
